NBC| 2016/2017 – Fantasy Schedule

nbc

Those are predictions based on feelings and NBC final schedule may end up very differently! It will be announced on Sunday. Stay tuned and until then, enjoy the read!

Dramas renewed: LAW & ORDER: SVU | GRIMM | THE BLACKLIST | CHICAGO FIRE | CHICAGO PD | CHICAGO MED | SHADES OF BLUE | BLINDSPOT

New dramas ordered: TAKEN | EMERALD CITY | CHICAGO JUSTICE | TIMELESS | MIDNIGHT, TEXAS | THIS IS US |

Comedies renewed: THE CARMICHAEL SHOW | SUPERSTORE

New comedies ordered: THE GOOD PLACE | POWERLESS | TRIAL & ERROR | GREAT NEWS | MARLON

As the number one network, NBC could simply decide to fill the holes with new shows and hoping they stick. But I hope they will be a bit more ambitious with some bold moves while taking care of their comedy slate, using Superstore and The Carmichael Show as launchpad for new comedies, surrounded by The Voice and Little Big Shots.

MONDAYS

THE VOICE

THE VOICE

TIMELESS

Among the new dramas ordered by NBC so far, Timeless is the closest to The Blacklist & Blindspot. And when I say “closest”, it’s still very far from it. The time-travel twist makes it a bit harder to jump on occasionally but as ambitious as the concept is, they did something pretty simple, easy to understand. Will they be able to sustain the premise and the excitement though? I’m not sure. It’s more in the vein of Revolution in the end, that didn’t thrive behind The Voice but did very bad when it was moved somewhere else on the schedule (wednesdays at 8) for the second season. I would have prefered Miranda’s Rights there but obviously, it’s not gonna happen. They could also leave Blindspot there one more year, but it would be a waste of their best timeslot. If Timeless doesn’t do good, the spin-off of The Blacklist could totally end up here for the remaining of the season…

TUESDAYS

THE VOICE

THE GOOD PLACE / SUPERSTORE

CHICAGO FIRE

The Chicago Med/Chicago Fire duo does pretty well these days, sometimes matching The Voice ratings. But it’s clear Chicago Med doesn’t really need this to do acceptable numbers. It would probably do the same anywhere else on the schedule. NBC needs to use The Voice to give a good exposition to their comedies, a genre that is still almost dead on the network. Promising Superstore has at least two new shows that would fit well with it : The Good Place with Kristen Bell & Ted Danson and DC Comics’ Powerless. I’ll try The Good Place first in the fall, keeping the other one for a midseason launch when The Voice returns. Trial & Error, Great News & drama Law & Order: True Crime could end up on mondays or tuesdays to fill the holes when The Voice will be gone for a few months.

WEDNESDAYS

CHICAGO MED

LAW & ORDER: SVU

CHICAGO PD

Wednesdays should remain stable with Chicago Med solidifying the 8pm slot, where The Mysteries Of Laura did ok and Heartbeat failed and got cancelled. Nothing else should change, especially Law & Order: SVU that stays strong despite Empire and ABC comedies still going strong.

THURSDAYS

TAKEN

THE BLACKLIST

BLINDSPOT

NBC has many options for the 8pm timeslot but with the Olympics this summer and the football on Thursdays for one month, they’d better put there a show with a short-term commitment. Taken is only 10 episodes and fit well with high-octane fares The Blacklist & Blindspot, now a duo. They could put a preview somewhere during the Olympics to promote it heavily. It’s a better option than Emerald City, that seems to be a trainwreck from the get go. Chicago Justice could start at 8 during midseason.

FRIDAYS

EMERALD CITY

GRIMM

DATELINE

The Mysteries of Laura was worth at least a reduced third season but it didn’t happen. Miniseries Emerald City has a shot there. Shades of Blue could take over at midseason, while Midnight, Texas could replace Grimm if they don’t decide to keep it for a summer run.

SUNDAYS

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

MIDSEASON

CHICAGO JUSTICE / POWERLESS / TRIAL & ERROR / SHADES OF BLUE / MIDNIGHT, TEXAS / THIS IS US / THE CARMICHAEL SHOW / MARLON / GREAT NEWS

Drama 2015 #PilotWatch : the full recap

It’s this time of the year when we get all judgy and mean, happy because we enjoy a show we didn’t think we would, sad because our expectations were too high for some others… It’s time to make tough choices (some are really easy though) and decide whose are the characters, the families, the places, the writers we want to spend the rest of the year with! Game ON.

_________________

Again, this year is not the year of comedy and like last year the drama field is filled with quite capable new entries, some of them having the potential to break out but none of them being exceptionnally original and a game changer. While soaps are gonna invade next pilot season, this time it’s The Blacklist clones, mixing procedural elements and mythology with big male leads (Blindspot, The Player, Game of Silence, Minority Report, Limitless, Lookinglass). Heavily serialized shows are once again mostly in ABC’s territory with Quantico, The Family, Wicked City and The Catch, a very solid freshman class. Blood and oil could be a goner very soon. CBS might be in big trouble if Supergirl doesn’t deliver, Code Black & Limitless are wild cards and the schedule is not great, to say the least. NBC only have Blindspot as a potential breakout hit, with Heroes Reborn which could surprise, at least at the beginning. FOX might be okay and will have to rely on Empire and possibly Scream Queens to spend a decent fall. Rosewood and Minority Report are not the ones to bet on. Midseason will be more exciting for everyone with such shows as The Family, The Catch, Lucifer and of course the return of The X-Files.

abc  The-Family-Saison-1-ABC

  1. THE FAMILY  rate rate rate rate rate

A dark, sometimes brutal, smart family soap, gripping and devastating. Perfectly cast. Joan Allen is incredible. Could be ABC’s Broadchurch. Critically acclaimed. Wow. Very few pilot can make you cry. I remember Homeland did. The Family is one of these. Chills.

2. QUANTICO  rate rate rate rate rate

The best pilot you’ll see this fall. It’s fast-paced, smart, exciting, fun, sexy, full of twists and turns. GREAT. Though it is not produced by Shondaland, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a Shonda Rhimes show. It is written HIT all over it. Priyanka Chopra really is a revelation. She’s not just stunningly beautiful, she’s good, really good. Though I still don’t get why ABC didn’t give it the best timeslot they had, it’s strong enough to stand on its own and explode.

3. THE CATCH rate rate rate rate

Mireille Enos is stunning and gives an intense & subtle performance. Pilot is classy, in a Scandal fashion. It’s too bad the secondary characters are so weak, they doesn’t spark any interest for now. Fired actors Damon Dayoub & BethanyJoyLenz were not bad at all. But I guess Mireille Enos is worth better performers. Peter Krause & Sonya Walger can turn this good pilot into a great show. Looking forward to it! Shonda Rhimes never disappoints.

4. BLOOD AND OIL rate rate

Bo-ring. Script was great so what happened? Too cute cast. Too cable-y feel with no substance. Too serious, no fun. It’s not steamy, not soapy enough. No pleasure & no guilt. Hard task to make it better but not yet a lost cause. The cast is so meh, though. Why ABC is giving it a better timeslot than Quantico is beyond me, honestly… Two good points: Don Jonhson & the natural setting. But I fear it will be all green screen by the second episode…

Not seen: WICKED CITY, KINGS AND PROPHETS (entirely being rewrote & reshot).

CBS-Logo  code-black

  1. CODE BLACK  rate rate rate

Going after ER & Grey’s Anatomy is an impossible task. They did their best to make it similar and different at the same time. It can be boring in spite of everything that is happening. We need to care about the characters and right now we don’t. Marcia Gay Harden could make me watch anything so I’ll give the show the time it needs… But damn, it’s depressing

2. SUPERGIRL  rate rate rate

Certainly not a CBS show, except for the big budget. It’s in the same range as The Flash, but with a story really too similar to Superman’s to suprise us in a any way. And it goes fast, too fast. Plus, there’s a girly vibe that feels outdated. No idea if it’s gonna work but it’s a show we didn’t need. They did their best. But the best version of this story can’t be geat, it seems.

3. LIMITLESS   rate rate rate

Not sure what to say about this one. Could go either way. I didn’t like it but there’s an audience for it. CBS-y but not too much. Boring, a bit. Not as efficient as Scorpion, for example. But there’s Bradley Cooper (temporarily). A waste of Jennifer Carpenter’s talent. Didn’t know Ron Rifkin is playing the hero’s dad! Nice surprise. Oh and Fringe‘s Blair Brown is playing the mother!

Not seen: RUSH HOUR, CRIMINAL MINDS: BEYOND BORDERS.

nbc  Blindspot - Season Pilot

  1. BLINDSPOT  rate rate rate rate

First Blindspot pilot scenes: how not to show any intimate body parts with a standing naked character all along in 10 lessons. This is a very entertaining and enjoyable pilot, with enough mistery for wanting to be back. A potential hit for NBC

2. HEARTBREAKER rate rate rate

Very surprised! Lots of rewrites. Melissa George is more charming than ever. It feels fresh, funny, warm, moving. Soundtrack is perfect, montage is efficient. Probably too close to Grey’s Anatomy but good job!

3. GAME OF SILENCE rate rate rate

Psychological thriller, not very thrilling though, dark and depressing for the most part. Cable-y. Could have been excellent, but for some reason it’s “just” good but it’s hard to imagine the show lasting for more than one short season, whatever happens ratings-wise. Should have been announced as a miniseries in my opinion.

4. THE PLAYER rate rate rate

If the show wasn’t doomed (timeslot…) I would have bet on it. But Blindspot is stronger, NBC made the right call. High octane. Sometimes it’s dark and not very convicing. Sometimes it’s fun and it works. Shares an awful lot with The Blacklist. Best things about the show: Wesley Snipes of course and Charity Wakefield ! She’s just great and… playful!

5. YOU, ME AND THE END OF THE WORLD  rate rate

It’s a dramedy but it’s not really funny nor emotional. Not that English either. Dunno what is. A bit of a mess? You have to wait for Rob Lowe to appear to really get pleasure out of it. And he’s not there much. Megan Mullally is almost unrecognizable. Seems like she’s just out of an Orange is the New Black episode. Which is good (Jenji Kohan, think about her!) Anyway NBC won’t be able to do anything with it. Hidden next summer or on fridays at 10? It’s likely and that’s OK.  I’ll be watching episode 2 though. It finally gets interesting in the very end…

Not seen: SHADES OF BLUE, HEROES REBORN, CHICAGO MED.

fox  Lucifer

  1. LUCIFER  rate rate rate rate

A very suitable substitute for gone too soon Forever. Same kind of fun police procedural, entertaining & warm. Tom Ellis is charming as hell.  After Castle, Bones… it doesn’t add anything new to the game, but TV needs shows like these. That being said the supernatural part/mythology could be more exciting than that. And the pilot takes too long to start

2. LOOKINGLASS / MINORITY REPORT  rate rate rate

Kinda like it in a weird way. It’s far from perfect but it’s emotional and fun at times. What I’m concerned about is the subsequent episodes. Will it become a procedural of some sort? Hope not… I think it would be a better fit with The X-Files than Lucifer. But Lucifer has better chances to work so it makes sense… It’s not really Frankenstein it’s more… FrankHulkenstein! / Really good looking pilot, kinda fun and badass. Convincing cast, good chemistry. A Fringe vibe. Great attention to details. More into it than I expected. Wondering how long it can last without becoming boring… and going off the air…

3. ROSEWOOD rate rate

Lazy & sometimes ridiculous shiny procedural. Tries too much to be cool & fun. Everything feels fake. Annoying hero even if Morris Chestnut is very good to watch. Ordered only because FOX desperately needed something to pair Empire with. The african-american hero was reason enough it seems. And it’s a shame.

Not seen: Scream Queens

cw   Pilot

  1. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND rate rate rate rate

Really liked it! There’s an unexpected Ally McBeal vibe! The kind of show you wanna watch cosy while eating an ice-cream. That was not a good fit with Showtime but it could have been their Girls. A weird fit with The CW. I just hope they won’t sweeten the whole thing up. Take the curse words out and keep the fun & spirit. The masturbation scene will be dearly missed. It’s the best one!

2. CONTAINMENT rate rate rate

Kinda hooked by the story but not much by the characters. Not totally convinced. Disgusting and entertaining. But isn’t it just one of those mediocre catastrophe TV movies turned into a 10-episode season?

Not seen: LEGENDS OF TOMORROW (not shot yet)

NBC | 2015/2016 – Fantasy Schedule

Those are predictions based on feelings and NBC final schedule may end up very differently! It will be announced tomorrow. Stay tuned and until then, enjoy the read!

Dramas renewed: LAW & ORDER: SVU – GRIMM – CHICAGO FIRE – CHICAGO PD – THE NIGHT SHIFT – THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA

New dramas ordered: HEROES REBORN – SHADES OF BLUE – EMERALD CITY – CHICAGO MED – BLINDSPOT – HEARTBREAKER – THE PLAYER – GAME OF SILENCE

Comedies renewed: UNDATEABLE

New comedies ordered: TELENOVELA – COACH – SUPERSTORE – CROWDED – PEOPLE ARE TALKING

MONDAYS

8pm – THE VOICE

9pm- THE VOICE

10pm- BLINDSPOT

Even if The Voice is down versus last year -but just a little bit- Monday at 10 is still the best launchpad NBC has in store. But State Of Affairs & The Night Shift‘s failures proved they can’t just throw anything there and hope for the best. Blindspot seems to be the safest bet: their best shot in the best slot! It can skew young, both male and female -with Jaimie Alexander and Sullivan Stapleton being a really hot pair- it’s ambitious but procedural-y enough to be enjoyed by the casual viewers and most of all, it has a Blacklist feel. That’s where the James Spader-starrer became a hit before being moved to Thursdays. Shades of Blue could have been an option, but it’s only a 13-episode season.

TUESDAYS

8pm- THE VOICE

9pm- BEST NIGHT EVER WITH NEAL PATRICK HARRIS

10pm- CHICAGO FIRE

It’s not easy scheduling variety show Best Night Ever With Patrick Harris Show. NBC made clear live events are their way of differentiating themselves from the other networks. They tried comedies after The Voice results show on Tuesday and they all failed. Only multicamera sitcom Undateable deserved a third season but launching it in the fall doesn’t seem to be the best idea (even with the live episodes twist). They need tro try something else first. So I decided to put The Neil Patrick Harris show at 9 with a possible special preview after America’s Got Talent‘s season finale in early September. Scheduling a variety show after The Voice totally makes sense. 10 episodes are ordered, it means by late november, they could finally launch new comedies and I’m thinking of a pair formed with Eva Longoria’s Telenovela and America Ferrera’s Superstore. If The Neil Patrick Harris Show is a hit, they will be able to promote them heavily during it for weeks! Undateable could be used during springtime with another multicamera comedy, either Coach or Crowded. At 10, stability is required with Chicago Fire doing OK.

WEDNESDAYS

8pm- HEARTBREAKER

9pm- LAW & ORDER: SVU

10pm- CHICAGO PD

Since The Mysteries Of Laura obtained a third season at eleventh hour (consisting of 13 episodes), they should move it to day, I’m thinking friday. NBC might want another light fare to start the night and soapy/cheesy medical Heartbreaker is their only option in that regard. I really don’t think it will work. That’s where Mercy failed a few years ago. Bur since they ordered it… Expect a cancellation sooner or later! The rest of the night remains the same. There’s no reason to change it. Lots of new crossovers between the Dick Wolf’s shows will help introduce Chicago Med at midseason.

THURSDAYS

8pm- HEROES REBORN

9pm- THE BLACKLIST

10pm- SHADES OF BLUE

Yes, placing Heroes Reborn, which is aiming at attracting the young (male) demo, right in front of Thursday Night Football on CBS for the first weeks of the season and then The Big Bang Theory is not the best idea ever, but where else could they put the 13-episode mini-series? Certainly not at 10, where a big chunck of the audience is not there anymore. I thought of Friday nights, paired with Grimm, but I guess they are a little bit more ambitious than that (though they shouldn’t…). The Blacklist stays where it is, even if the results are meh. It’s still better than the previous years with comedies. At 10, Jennifer Lopez’s cop show Shades of Blue could do the trick for 13 weeks. It should be kept far from the successful shows broadcasted between 8 and 10 on spanish-language networks. Chicago Med should go there at midseason (the ER spot for 15 years).

FRIDAYS

8pm- THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA

9pm- GRIMM

10pm- DATELINE

Grimm should stop trying fantasy shows on fridays, they’re doomed to fail. Grimm is not strong enough to launch anything and a new show can’t self-start on a Friday Night. Put The Mysteries Of Laura there, then why not, The Night Shift or another season of The Biggest Loser later in the season.

MIDSEASON

Dramas: THE NIGHT SHIFT / EMERALD CITY / APOCALYPSE SLOUGH / CHICAGO MED / THE PLAYER / GAME OF SILENCE

Comedies: UNDATEABLE / TELENOVELA / COACH / SUPERSTORE / CROWDED

As usual, NBC has a lot in store for midseason, especially since they have to replace Sunday nights once the Sunday Night Football has ended and start something new wherever Heroes Reborn and Shades Of Blue end up. The first spot could be filled with another 10-episode mini series, Emerald City, and the second one with Chicago Med or The Player, that could do well with The Blacklist. The Player could also be launched on Monday after The Voice if the first season of Blindspot is split into two parts. I don’t see English co-produced Apocalypse Slough appearing anywhere on the regular schedule but Friday is a possibility, and I guess Game Of Silence will end up at 10 on Sundays during springtime. The extra comedies ordered could take The Voice‘s slot on Tuesday between two editions.

Before NBC reveals its new schedule next Sunday, here’s the best & worst of their pilot season ! Just my humble opinion.

BLINDS

DRAMAS

1. BLINDSPOT – Ordered to series

an high octane thriller with two kick-ass characters at the center of it, that will please those who like action scenes as much as those who are more into suspense and mysteries. It’s a no-brainer pick-upFull preview here

2. THE PLAYER – Ordered to series

it’s fast-paced, it’s dark, it’s twisted, it’s smart and it’s kind of fun. There is a mythology behind, a lot questions to be answered, a lot of characters whose motivations need to be explained and the promise of a thrilling ride.Full preview here

3. GAME OF SILENCE – Ordered to series

“this one is probably the hardest to sell on this network. Not only because it’s the darkest, with less action and more psychology -which is definitely a good thing- but because it’s heavily serialized with just one little procedural element.” Full preview here

4. THE CURSE OF THE FUENTES WOMEN – Officially Dead

mostly ridiculous, with some crazy scenes (…)  but that’s exactly what makes the show attractive at the same time.Full preview here

5. SHADES OF BLUE – Ordered to series

It’s basically a female character driven procedural that tries to be a little bit more. Jennifer Lopez may have found the right vehicle to remind people she’s not just a singer and an American Idol judge.” Full preview here

6. LOVE IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD – Has a shot

the closest thing to Empire any network has to offer as of now. It is very different in many ways but NBC certainly has something to play with here. But they should not expect the same ratings.Full preview here

7. HEARTBREAKER – Ordered to series

as cheesy as it sounds. But I’m not saying it’s a total mess. In fact, it’s quite solid. But for a show developed during 2004/2005 pilot season (and I may be indulgent), not 2015/2016.Full preview here

8. WARRIOR – Has a shot

it’s not fun, most of the time. It’s not emotional (…) the perfect example of those projects not worth a pilot order that get it anyway for whatever mysterious reasons.Full a preview

9. UNVEILED – Looks dead

should never ever see the light of day. Not on a network. Not in 2015. Not in real life! Full preview here

COMEDIES

1. STRANGE CALLS – Officially Dead

“Really different, really special, really funny. Loved it! Maybe not broad enough but definitely a keeper!”

2. SUPERSTORE – Ordered to series

NBC desperately needs a broad comedy that can please low and middle class America as much as well-educated viewers, young and old people, blacks and whites and latinos… Superstore can be this one.Full preview here

3. TELENOVELA – Ordered to series

“It’s not as good as Desperate Housewives was when it started and it’s different in many ways but it’s good enough to entertain us once a week and do the trick, but for how long?”  Full preview here

4. HOW WE LIVE – Has a shot

“Not as original as it wants to be, but pretty funny overall. Tries too hard to be the next Modern Family, but can’t blame them.”

5. UNTITLED SUZANNE MARTIN PROJECT – Ordered to series

“Isn’t it a waste of Carrie Preston’s huge talent? A multicamera comedy is not really where we want to see her, but she certainly can improve the material, which is not bad to begin with. Just déjà vu.”

6. TAKE IT FROM US – Looks dead

“Some sort of How I Met Your mother type of comedy, by one of How I Met Your Mother’s writer. Found the characters really cool. Wouldn’t mind watching it.

7. NOT SAFE FOR WORK – Looks dead

Most of the pilot is about embarrassing scenes with awkward people you’re slowly falling in love with. I’m not sure there’s really a show in there, it’s too much of a love triangle and not much of anything else, but it’s not bad at all. Just not what NBC needs right now.”

8. PEOPLE ARE TALKING – Ordered to series

“Too much. People are talking too much! This multicamera comedy has an interesting diversity cast element -blacks, asian, white- and some really funny lines but in the end, it’s not a show and characters I feel like I want to go back to.”

9. SHARING – Looks dead

Too geeky, definitely not broad enough. Might be cool. Might be fun. But won’t last long. That’s old NBC.”

10. PROBLEM CHILD – Has a shot

With Bishop, the famous Problem Child, talking directly to the camera all along the episode, you can’t keep thinking about Malcolm. The show has a hard time becoming its own thing. And the cast is not crazy attractive. It’s a pass for me.

11. CUCKOO (US) – Officially Dead

Have never watched the British show it’s based on, but pretty sure it’s as awful as this one. I mean, Cuckoo is a fucking pain in the ass, whatever the side of the Pond. I didn’t find him funny any second. Just wanted to slap him in the face. The saddest thing is the cast is pretty great (Cheryl Hines & Michael Chicklis, husband and wife!) But please don’t NBC.

What pilots are you rooting for?
