Tough year for CBS with Supergirl, Limitless & Code Black not becoming the hits they hoped for and needed, while shows like CSI Cyber & Elementary didn’t deliver. Les Moonves tries to convince everyone in the press that everything is okay, even better than ever, but of course it’s a lie. They’re not in immediate danger and other networks (ABC & FOX) are in way worst situations but they’re in a downward spiral and they have to react! With a development year that seemed weak, things won’t be easy for them…

 


MONDAYS

KEVIN CAN WAIT | MAN WITH A PLAN

PURE GENIUS

Now Supergirl is gone for good on The CW –a really bad idea from the get go but CBS never listens– they can revamp mondays and give an hour back to comedies. Honestly, none of their new drama entries are 8pm shows. Maybe MacGyver, but it’s unlikely it will be ready for fall with all the work they have to do to make it watchable. An hour of Matthew Perry & Matt LeBlanc would be a great marketing plan BUT I don’t think CBS is high enough on The Odd Couple, despite its solid performances since its late return, to start a night with it. They will probably keep it for a later time, as a joker if other comedies fail. Two new family comedies back to back, Kevin Can Wait & Man With a Plan, both about dads at home, might be a better solution. Younger viewers won’t like this but it will remind older people the CBS of the 90s with the monday comedy line-up and shows like King of Queens (hello Kevin James !). When CBS will have football on thursdays for five weeks at the beginning of the season, The Big Bang Theory can move here like they did the years before to help launching one of two new comedies, probably Kevin Can Wait. Scorpion is central to the night and should stay here, serving as a lead-in for new medical drama Pure Genius. They’re very compatible and CBS doesn’t have so many shows right now to help launching others. NCIS: Los Angeles can be put on a hiatus. Either Pure Genius is a flop and it can come back there. Either Pure Genius works and they can keep it for later in the year, like on fridays between two editions of The Amazing Race.

NCIS: NEW ORLEANS

BULL

Bull is not a show that will attract in the young demo, so it makes it a perfect fit with the NCIS shows, especially since it’s starring Michael Weatherly who just departed the mothership. And CBS can’t make the same mistake they did with Limitless. It was also an interesting option for the 9pm slot on sundays, taking over for The Good Wife but I don’t see it happening this year. But ultimately, that’s where it could end up.

CRIMINAL MINDS

CRIMINAL MINDS: BEYOND BORDERS

The 10pm slot is a problem for CBS for quite a few years now. They have to settle with something that does okay, rather than launching yet another drama that will ultimately fail. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders doesn’t provide incredible ratings but the retention with Criminal Minds is very good. And maybe it will be able to take over at 9pm someday.

TRAINING DAY

When football will end, The Big Bang Theory will once again debut the night and for the first time in many years CBS finally has a multicam sitcom that fits with it! The Great Indoors, starring Joel McHale, is about geeky millenials. If this one doesn’t work, nothing will. Oh, but maybe it’s very bad! (I think it is based on the script, but there’s potential anyway). Then Mom can be back, paired with 2 Broke Girls. But I have the terrible feeling CBS will push it to midseason, like they originally planned this year before Angel From Angel flopped, and try renewed single-cam Life In Pieces there. And it’s gonna be ugly. I’m not a huge fan of Training Day on Thursdays at 10 quite frankly. But I don’t have better option, except if MacGyver is ready for fall…

CBS has finally made a decision about medical drama Code Black, that showed some promise towards the end of the first season. It got a 17-episode season, with some tweaks to make it better and probably skew younger. But keeping it on wednesdays, where it has to face Chicago PD, doesn’t seem to be the best option. I think the 9pm slot on sundays gives it a better chance to succeed since there is less pressure there and it seems an okay fit with Madam Secretary. When the season will end, CBS could try Doubt there.

Bunker Hill (CBS) pilot preview: Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, let’s save lives!

Nowadays, when a new medical drama is coming our way, the inevitable question is: is it more like ER or Grey’s Anatomy? Last year, at pilot stage, Code Black made me feel like it wanted to be ER but couldn’t help being more of a high-octane Grey’s Anatomy. LFE, the other medical pilot ordered at CBS at the time, was clearly a Grey’s Anatomy new generation, with a cable feel. Heartbeat at NBC was just an update of Grey’s Anatomy, with an older heroine and without the Shonda’s touch. With Bunker Hill, I have to admit it’s hard to tell. Which is a good sign. A very good one indeed. I don’t want to be presomptuous, but I feel like it has a good chance to become something if it’s picked-up. The “cutting edge” approach, which seemed weak to me when I read the pitch, is on the contrary its biggest strength. The show works a bit like a window on the future of medecine and the future of the hospital experience for both the patients and the medical staff. It’s fascinating and engaging.

The project written by Sarah Watson was first set up at CBS last year with a put pilot commitment, but it didn’t make it. The idea was revisited this year with a new take written by Jason Katims himself. I think we don’t give enough credit to this guy. Okay, he’s no Shonda Rhimes or Greg Berlanti, his shows are never huge hits but they’re always damn good. As a producer, he’s responsible for the incredible The Path at Hulu, which premieres in a few days, and he has scored pilot orders at HBO (Us.) and Showtime (Mating). Bunker Hill is his only network drama in the works at the time and I really hope CBS will give it a chance. He already failed to get a series order with his previous medical drama attempt a few years ago, County at NBC.

The pilot of Bunker Hill starts the day Walter Wallace gets fired from the Cincinnati hospital he worked for decades. A child patient died because of him. Wrong decision at the worst time. Six months later, he’s still unemployed and accept to visit a hospital far from his home and family in California, one which apparently wants him. And the whole episode consists of convincing him to stay. He’s welcomed by Angie, a geeky Asian programmer who scans his whole body in 3D (!) and the famous James Bell, a young magnetic billionaire, brilliant and totally unapologetic, that I would described as a nicer and crazier Dr House. He rocks. It’s a classic but efficient confrontation between an old-school doctor and a young brilliant mind. They make one hell of a duo.

Other characters are Zoe, an idealistic physician; Scott, the McSteamy of the hospital, an intense neurologist; Malick, an afro-american who defies our traditional idea of a doctor with his street vibe and countless tatoos; and finally Talaikha, who officially gets the award of “most complicated character name of pilot season” – she’s Doctor Channarayapatra! She may or may not have a crush on Wallace, despite the age difference. That’s all I’m saying. This diverse group made me wanna stay longer in Bunker Hill. There’s a lot to do with each one of them. They are portrayed just the right way. Just as Jason Katims knows how to. We’re given enough informations to care about them already and we feel there’s still plenty to give away in subsequent episodes. The patients and their medical cases are also taken care of properly, with sensibility. And the way they are treated, thanks to new technologies and bold thinking, is not the same as in every other medical shows. What becomes boring in Grey’s Anatomy sometimes -because they already did almost everything- is refreshed here.

The hospital itself is a character. We follow Wallace in his discovery of this incredible place, where there is for example a zen garden, where families wait for informations about their loved ones in a soothing environment; or an incubator, a real geek’s paradise with high-tech gadgets, a ping-pong table, for the doctors. In every patient’s room, there’s a “wonder wall”, a huge screen where doctors can get all the informations they need about the patient, that can turn into anything the patient want when the doctors are away, like an image of a Buddhist Temple or of the earth rising over the moon… All of this is impressive and exciting (and could be costly for the production).

Bunker Hill looks like the new medical drama we were all waiting for and networks are looking for a long time : it feels fresh, distinctive from what we are used to in the genre; warmhearted, optimistic; incarnate. I really hope CBS will give it a chance, whatever they decide to do with Code Black, which is on the fence for renewal at the time. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, CBS!

Drama 2015 #PilotWatch : the full recap

It’s this time of the year when we get all judgy and mean, happy because we enjoy a show we didn’t think we would, sad because our expectations were too high for some others… It’s time to make tough choices (some are really easy though) and decide whose are the characters, the families, the places, the writers we want to spend the rest of the year with! Game ON.

Again, this year is not the year of comedy and like last year the drama field is filled with quite capable new entries, some of them having the potential to break out but none of them being exceptionnally original and a game changer. While soaps are gonna invade next pilot season, this time it’s The Blacklist clones, mixing procedural elements and mythology with big male leads (Blindspot, The Player, Game of Silence, Minority Report, Limitless, Lookinglass). Heavily serialized shows are once again mostly in ABC’s territory with Quantico, The Family, Wicked City and The Catch, a very solid freshman class. Blood and oil could be a goner very soon. CBS might be in big trouble if Supergirl doesn’t deliver, Code Black & Limitless are wild cards and the schedule is not great, to say the least. NBC only have Blindspot as a potential breakout hit, with Heroes Reborn which could surprise, at least at the beginning. FOX might be okay and will have to rely on Empire and possibly Scream Queens to spend a decent fall. Rosewood and Minority Report are not the ones to bet on. Midseason will be more exciting for everyone with such shows as The Family, The Catch, Lucifer and of course the return of The X-Files.

A dark, sometimes brutal, smart family soap, gripping and devastating. Perfectly cast. Joan Allen is incredible. Could be ABC’s Broadchurch. Critically acclaimed. Wow. Very few pilot can make you cry. I remember Homeland did. The Family is one of these. Chills.

2. QUANTICO  rate rate rate rate rate

The best pilot you’ll see this fall. It’s fast-paced, smart, exciting, fun, sexy, full of twists and turns. GREAT. Though it is not produced by Shondaland, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a Shonda Rhimes show. It is written HIT all over it. Priyanka Chopra really is a revelation. She’s not just stunningly beautiful, she’s good, really good. Though I still don’t get why ABC didn’t give it the best timeslot they had, it’s strong enough to stand on its own and explode.

3. THE CATCH rate rate rate rate 

Mireille Enos is stunning and gives an intense & subtle performance. Pilot is classy, in a Scandal fashion. It’s too bad the secondary characters are so weak, they doesn’t spark any interest for now. Fired actors Damon Dayoub & BethanyJoyLenz were not bad at all. But I guess Mireille Enos is worth better performers. Peter Krause & Sonya Walger can turn this good pilot into a great show. Looking forward to it! Shonda Rhimes never disappoints.

4. BLOOD AND OIL rate rate 

Bo-ring. Script was great so what happened? Too cute cast. Too cable-y feel with no substance. Too serious, no fun. It’s not steamy, not soapy enough. No pleasure & no guilt. Hard task to make it better but not yet a lost cause. The cast is so meh, though. Why ABC is giving it a better timeslot than Quantico is beyond me, honestly… Two good points: Don Jonhson & the natural setting. But I fear it will be all green screen by the second episode…

 

Not seen: WICKED CITY, KINGS AND PROPHETS (entirely being rewrote & reshot).

Going after ER & Grey’s Anatomy is an impossible task. They did their best to make it similar and different at the same time. It can be boring in spite of everything that is happening. We need to care about the characters and right now we don’t. Marcia Gay Harden could make me watch anything so I’ll give the show the time it needs… But damn, it’s depressing

2. SUPERGIRL  rate rate rate

Certainly not a CBS show, except for the big budget. It’s in the same range as The Flash, but with a story really too similar to Superman’s to suprise us in a any way. And it goes fast, too fast. Plus, there’s a girly vibe that feels outdated. No idea if it’s gonna work but it’s a show we didn’t need. They did their best. But the best version of this story can’t be geat, it seems.

3. LIMITLESS   rate rate rate

Not sure what to say about this one. Could go either way. I didn’t like it but there’s an audience for it. CBS-y but not too much. Boring, a bit. Not as efficient as Scorpion, for example. But there’s Bradley Cooper (temporarily). A waste of Jennifer Carpenter’s talent. Didn’t know Ron Rifkin is playing the hero’s dad! Nice surprise. Oh and Fringe‘s Blair Brown is playing the mother!

First Blindspot pilot scenes: how not to show any intimate body parts with a standing naked character all along in 10 lessons. This is a very entertaining and enjoyable pilot, with enough mistery for wanting to be back. A potential hit for NBC

2. HEARTBREAKER rate rate rate

Very surprised! Lots of rewrites. Melissa George is more charming than ever. It feels fresh, funny, warm, moving. Soundtrack is perfect, montage is efficient. Probably too close to Grey’s Anatomy but good job!

3. GAME OF SILENCE rate rate rate

Psychological thriller, not very thrilling though, dark and depressing for the most part. Cable-y. Could have been excellent, but for some reason it’s “just” good but it’s hard to imagine the show lasting for more than one short season, whatever happens ratings-wise. Should have been announced as a miniseries in my opinion.

4. THE PLAYER rate rate rate

If the show wasn’t doomed (timeslot…) I would have bet on it. But Blindspot is stronger, NBC made the right call. High octane. Sometimes it’s dark and not very convicing. Sometimes it’s fun and it works. Shares an awful lot with The Blacklist. Best things about the show: Wesley Snipes of course and Charity Wakefield ! She’s just great and… playful!

5. YOU, ME AND THE END OF THE WORLD  rate rate 

It’s a dramedy but it’s not really funny nor emotional. Not that English either. Dunno what is. A bit of a mess? You have to wait for Rob Lowe to appear to really get pleasure out of it. And he’s not there much. Megan Mullally is almost unrecognizable. Seems like she’s just out of an Orange is the New Black episode. Which is good (Jenji Kohan, think about her!) Anyway NBC won’t be able to do anything with it. Hidden next summer or on fridays at 10? It’s likely and that’s OK.  I’ll be watching episode 2 though. It finally gets interesting in the very end…

  1. LUCIFER  rate rate rate rate

A very suitable substitute for gone too soon Forever. Same kind of fun police procedural, entertaining & warm. Tom Ellis is charming as hell.  After Castle, Bones… it doesn’t add anything new to the game, but TV needs shows like these. That being said the supernatural part/mythology could be more exciting than that. And the pilot takes too long to start

2. LOOKINGLASS / MINORITY REPORT  rate rate rate 

Kinda like it in a weird way. It’s far from perfect but it’s emotional and fun at times. What I’m concerned about is the subsequent episodes. Will it become a procedural of some sort? Hope not… I think it would be a better fit with The X-Files than Lucifer. But Lucifer has better chances to work so it makes sense… It’s not really Frankenstein it’s more… FrankHulkenstein! / Really good looking pilot, kinda fun and badass. Convincing cast, good chemistry. A Fringe vibe. Great attention to details. More into it than I expected. Wondering how long it can last without becoming boring… and going off the air…

3. ROSEWOOD rate rate 

Lazy & sometimes ridiculous shiny procedural. Tries too much to be cool & fun. Everything feels fake. Annoying hero even if Morris Chestnut is very good to watch. Ordered only because FOX desperately needed something to pair Empire with. The african-american hero was reason enough it seems. And it’s a shame.

  1. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND rate rate rate rate

Really liked it! There’s an unexpected Ally McBeal vibe! The kind of show you wanna watch cosy while eating an ice-cream. That was not a good fit with Showtime but it could have been their Girls. A weird fit with The CW. I just hope they won’t sweeten the whole thing up. Take the curse words out and keep the fun & spirit. The masturbation scene will be dearly missed. It’s the best one!

2. CONTAINMENT rate rate rate 

Kinda hooked by the story but not much by the characters. Not totally convinced. Disgusting and entertaining. But isn’t it just one of those mediocre catastrophe TV movies turned into a 10-episode season?

Scorpion did well the past season at 9 and it was not an easy bet since CBS put sitcoms there for decades. They shouldn’t mess with that, keep the momentum, especially since they’ll have a new comedy to launch just before, first helped by relocated The Big Bang Theory during football, then paired with -more compatible- 2 Broke Girls, which lost steam. NCIS: Los Angeles stay put at 10. It would be a mistake to move it again. Too soon. Plus, Castle is no longer a threat but Blindspot on NBC could be. Too risky to launch something new against it.

TUESDAYS

9pm- NCIS: NEW ORLEANS

10pm- RUSH HOUR

I’m not sure CBS care that much about Rush Hour. Yes, they ordered it but it’s a Warner Bros. production. I don’t think they’re betting a lot on it. They’ll give it a try there. It will bomb and then they will be able to bring back CSI: Cyber and it will be a special night dedicated to old people. CSI: Cyber wanted to skew young, but it’s a big miss! It doesn’t work and it skews old. For a first season, it’s really concerning. CBS decided to renew it nonetheless and reboot it a little bit. It won’t change anything. This one’s gonna be dead long before the syndication gods can help it. I don’t see where to put it else than Tuesday at 10, with a decent lead-in though. Will Patricia Arquette do better than Person Of Interest? It would be sad, but it’s likely. CSI: Cyber is way more compatible with the NCIS franchise than Person Of Interest was or Rush Hour is…

WEDNESDAYS

It’s about time CBS stops using Survivor, which is still a decent lead-in, to help Criminal Minds. The show is old and it begins to show. Plus, it’s too expensive, CBS co-owns with ABC Studios, they don’t make that much money out of it. Put it at 10! I see Wednesday working the same way as Monday: an old show at 10, with something new at 9. Limitless is CBS’s new pop-corn series after Scorpion, it deserves to get that chance. Rush Hour is another option, but let’s use this strategy with the best one.

Life In Pieces is some kind of new Modern Family. If it’s as solid as it should be, CBS can try it at 9. Pairing it with The Big Bang Theory wouldn’t make sense because 1/ They wouldn’t really work together 2/ The Odd Couple is renewed and it can’t move and become The Millers 2.0Life In Pieces & Mom is a pair that works better, even if I hate pairing a multicamera comedy with a single-camera comedy. But CBS doesn’t leave us much of a choice! At 10, I’m sad to report I couldn’t come up with a better idea than keeping Elementary there. Code Black was my first idea but I thought putting Code Black against How to Get Away With Murder would be kind of stupid. They’re trying to reach the same feminine audience… Rush Hour or Supergirl wouldn’t make sense. So here we go with another year of low-rated Elementary!

FRIDAYS

8pm- UNDERCOVER BOSS

9pm- HAWAII 5-0

10pm- BLUE BLOODS

At 8, scripted shows will continue. Undercover Boss first, The Amazing Race then but for just one edition this year. Hawaii 5-0 & Blue Bloods stay put, but one of them will have to go sooner or later to give its place to NCIS: Los Angeles for example.

SUNDAYS

8pm- MADAM SECRETARY

9pm- CODE BLACK

10pm- THE GOOD WIFE

This year, CBS successfully launched Madam Secretary on Sunday right behind 60 minutes and just before The Good Wife. Assuming The Good Wife‘s 7th season will be its last -as its creators want to- the show can move at 10 where its low ratings on the demo won’t be a concern anymore, plus it’s no longer a decent lead-in (Battle Creek learnt it the hard way). But was it ever? They need to give a shot of fresh blood to the night and medical drama Code Black seems the perfect way to do so! The Marcia Gay Harden-driven show would fit well with the so-called “prestige” night and its feminine vibe. It will prevent Code Black from being a huge it, but the expectations are so low that it can also be protected and with a 55-yearl old lead, it ‘sad but it’s the truth: CBS knows exactly it will be weak on the demo.

MID-SEASON

PERSON OF INTEREST / CSI / CSI: CYBER / CRIMINAL MINDS; BEYOND BORDERS / MIKE & MOLLY / SUPERGIRL

CSI will probably be back for just a 2-hour movie. Put it on a Sunday around December and you’re good to go. Person of Interest‘s fifth and expected final season will get The Mentalist treatment: an uninterrupted run during winter. Where? On Wednesday at 8 when Survivor is on hiatus? Doesn’t look good but why not? Regarding Supergirl… Gosh. I don’t know what to do with that. That’s why I decided to keep it for midseason (summer would be better…). I doubt CBS will give it the post-Superbowl slot since they don’t produce it in-house, it’s Warner Bros. but it may be the only way for it to work and tell the work: you wre wrong, we are young, look at us ! But in which regular timeslot then? I have no idea… It has to be at 8 to reach the younger viewers… Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders looks more like a midseason back-up. As always, Mike & Molly will be used as a midseason replacement if one of the new comedies fail. It would be fun that someday they can’t find a slot to put it because their new comedies would have worked! Who know? Maybe this it!

Before CBS reveals its new schedule next Wednesday, here’s the best & worst of their pilot season ! Just my humble opinion.

DRAMAS

1. LFE – Officially Dead

“Shares some DNA with Grey’s Anatomy but just the right amount. The resident characters are fresh and a lot of fun (…) It feels cable-y, not network-y. That’s why I don’t think CBS will go for it. And that’s sad, ‘cos it’s the best.” Full preview here

2. FOR JUSTICE – Officially Dead

“No other pilot this season resonates more with what’s happening right now in the United States than For Justice (…)  I wish it were less academical, more serialized too, funnier maybe because it’s deadly serious for the most part, but for what it brings to the table in terms of debate and diversity, without being too sanctimonious, it has to go to series.” Full preview here

3. CODE BLACK – Ordered to series

“Honestly, the script is a page-turner, I was hooked! But it also felt a lot like an high-octane episode of Grey’s Anatomy (…) Code Black is not new, and not particularly modern either (…) lacks a sense of humor.” Full preview here

4. SNEAKY PETE – Officially Dead

“this show imagined by David Shore & Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston doesn’t try to be all shiny and beautiful. It’s not as dark and dirty, but it’s not your smooth cop show with sexy people investigating and/or dying (…) The pilot’s one is kind of funny and action-packed and sets up an efficient template that could work for years.” Full preview here

5. LIMITLESS – Ordered to series

“it’s a police procedural in the end, but with a greater mythology and a science-fiction twist that helps making it special (…) I didn’t fall in love with Limitless but I recognize the script has great qualities and there’s an evident potential here. It may even be a better TV show than a movie.” Full preview here

6. DOUBT – Officially Dead

” Doubt has been created by two ex-writers and producers of Grey’s Anatomy, and it shows. Doubt is soapy (…) Doubt is your classical legal drama with two prominent cases dealt with in the pilot episode. They are not particularly original but they do the job efficiently (…) a decent but shy show developed by/for the wrong network.” Full preview here

7. RUSH HOUR – Ordered to series

It’s exactly what you think it is. What you expect is what you get. It’s funny, for those who like that kind of humor (…) The first Rush Hour movie came out in 1998! You can’t make the same shit as a TV series almost 20 years later and expect the same result and the same welcome from the audience.” Full preview here

1. LIFE IN PIECES – Ordered to series

“an uneven but quite good script… but for a show launched 6 years ago, before Modern Family arrives. CBS has definitely found something that looks like a hit, with a terrific cast, but in my opinion, they missed an opportunity to be relevant about diversity. It was the perfect vehicle for it.” Full preview here

2. AMY FROM HELL – Ordered to series

“Not as profound as Mom, not as funny as 2 Broke Girls, but surely an interesting take on women-centric sitcoms. But why isn’t it a multicamera?! Didn’t find the pilot great but I feek like there’s a real potential behind. It could become a must-see, and the fact that the unlikely pair is played by Jane Lynch & Maggie Lawson makes it a safer bet.”

3. UNTITLED O’SHANNON & WARREN PROJECT – Officially Dead

“Very much in the vein of How I Met Your Mother -with Adam Brody playing some sort of cuter version of Ted Mosby, still hopelessly romantic- it takes place at three different times of the characters’s lives, so it’s a real challenge, one that I would like CBS to risk. They need something like this for the younger demo. And it’s funny too, by the way” 

4. SUPER CLYDE – Officially Dead

“Quite liked the first version. Quite satisfied with the second one, even though I didn’t feel like there was such an improvement (and we lose the sister character that I found great). Still doesn’t think Greg Garcia’s style fits with CBS’s but if they are willing to give it a chance with this new cast that looks more attractive, then try it!”

5. THE HALF OF IT – Has a shot

“Too classical, but that may be its force. It’s the only multicamera worth a try at CBS this season. And it works mostly.” 

6. HAPPY LIFE – Officially Dead

“Didn’t like it first, the Joe character was just too happy for my taste, but it’s the secondary characters that made it work somehow along the way. Pretty pleased that I’ve read it in the end, but not sure I would have watched it.

7. UNTITLED TOMMY JOHNAGIN PROJECT – Officially Dead

“Generic, didn’t make me laugh once… No need to say more!”
