FOX | 2015/2016 – Fantasy Schedule

fox

Those are predictions based on feelings and FOX final schedule may end up very differently! It will be announced on monday. Stay tuned and until then, enjoy the read!

Dramas renewed: BONES – SLEEPY HOLLOW – GOTHAM – EMPIRE

New dramas ordered: THE X-FILES – SCREAM QUEENS – HOUDINI & DOYLE – MINORITY REPORT – ROSEWOOD – LUCIFER – THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE

Comedies renewed: THE SIMPSONS – FAMILY GUY – NEW GIRL – BOB’S BURGER – BROOKLYN NINE-NINE – THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

New comedies ordered: BORDERTOWN – GRANDFATHERED – THE GRINDER – THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

SUNDAYS

8pm- THE SIMPSONS / BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

9pm- FAMILY GUY / THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

FOX has found some momentum with The Last Man On Earth on Sunday, they’d better launch season 2 right away in the fall. Then long-awaited animated comedy Bordertown from Seth MacFarlane can finally air at midseason in the slot. Nothing else should change.

MONDAYS

8pm- GOTHAM

9pm- MINORITY REPORT

Gotham has lost a lot of steam over the year. FOX should have sticked with the original plan: no more than 15 episodes per season. But they were so desperate… Next year, there’s no reason to move the show somewhere else. Pairing it with sci-fi fare Minority Report makes sense. FOX bets big on it (though I’m pretty sure it won’t be a very strong player) but honestly, any other new show ordered could have been put there. Sleepy Hollow has to move anyway.

TUESDAYS

8pm- SCREAM QUEENS

9pm- THE GRINDER / GRANDFATHERED

As every other Ryan Murphy’s show, Scream Queens is guaranteed to start strong, because of curiosity and buzz, but what happens next totally depends on the quality. Honestly, I’m not very confident about this one but FOX will do the best they can to make it work. They already promote it since 2 months so… At 9, comedy should stay with new shows but New Girl is already old and has to go. Rob Lowe’s The Grinder & John Stamos’ Grandfathered should be paired, for better of for worse! It’s definitely a risky night but if FOX doesn’t take some risk, they’ll end up in the trash once again.

WEDNESDAYS

8pm- ROSEWOOD

9pm- EMPIRE

Definitely not the pair I was hoping for but since FOX decided not to give a chance to young-skewing musical dramedy Studio City (at least for now), they will bet on african-american viewers with Rosewood, a procedural with a black lead, leading to phenomenon Empire. Why not switching them? Because I think Empire could lose viewers at an earlier time slot and FOX certainly don’t want that. Plus, they’ll want their affiliates to stay happy, at least that night. I also think FOX should split Empire‘s season into two parts (6-8 episodes for fall, 6-8 episodes for spring) and bring The X-Files (paired with The Frankenstein Code?) in between for 6 weeks and make it a big event on a night where they know they are able to attract a lot of viewers.

THURSDAYS

8pm- BONES

9pm- SLEEPY HOLLOW

I don’t think FOX should launch too many new dramas at the same time, three is enough, so Thursday is just pairing two very modest players together on a night where FOX can’t compete anyway. Sleepy Hollow will have to go at midseason. Maybe for Lucifer.

FRIDAYS

8pm- MASTERCHEF JUNIOR

9pm- NEW GIRL / NEW GIRL

Masterchef Junior could have been used on another night but Friday is good too. FOX needs to have a little more ambition than that. They also have Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares for the rest of the season. At 9, they can just dump New Girl there with back to back episodes. They’ll have their +100 episodes.

MID-SEASON

Dramas: THE X-FILES / HOUDINI & DOYLE / THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE / LUCIFER

Comedies: BORDERTOWN / THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

I’m not sure what FOX can do with Houdini & Doyle, but it doesn’t seem to be a priority. Regarding comedy The Guide To Surviving Life, only 6 episodes have been ordered. Not a big vote of confidence. FOX will use it wherever they have a hole to fill in spring.

Before FOX reveals its new schedule next Monday, here’s the best & worst of their pilot season ! Just my humble opinion.

DRAMAS

1. LUCIFER – Ordered to series

It’s vivid, energetic and a lot of fun (…)  an almighty entertaining and funny as hell detective dramaFull preview here

2. STUDIO CITY – Dead but could be redeveloped

“I’m always suspicious when a show is officially described as a little bit of this mixed with a little it of that. But this time, they’re not playing with us: it really is The OC meets Shameless. With a bit of Nashville too.” Full preview here

3. FRANKENSTEIN – Ordered to series

“This pilot surprised me. In a good way! (…) It’s alive! It’s watchable! But a good pilot doesn’t always become a good series and I tend to think this one is more a good pilot than a good series. It could be really cool, if it was not meant to be a procedural in the end.” Full preview here

4. MINORITY REPORT – Ordered to series

definitely a hot property, with a honorable pilot script (…) It looks like a failure because those who liked the movie are not remotely excited by the project from what I understand and those who are not familar with it probably won’t find any good reason to give it a chance.” Full preview here

5.  ROSEWOOD – Ordered to series

“Dead on arrival. It’s boring and it has zero originality -except if you consider diversity as an originality of some sort.” Full preview here

COMEDIES

1. THE GRINDER – Ordered to series

“This one made me laughed a lot on the page. And imagining Rob Lowe doing the crazy made me want it bad. I don’t know how long the show can maintain the fun but for now, it’s a huge YES!”

2. THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE – Ordered to series

“Can’t say I liked everything about this pilot, but it certainly has a lot going for it, starting with a good appeal for the younger demo. I laughed a bit and I can see it last. Every episode is a lesson, and I want these guys to teach me some more”.

3. DETOUR – Officially Dead

“Your good ol’ coming of age story, but feels kinda fresh somehow. Sweet and funny, without being hilarious. Way broader than I expected.”

4. THE PERFECT STANLEYS – Officially Dead

“Multicamera comedies and FOX don’t mix really well since… well, forever (the exception being “Married… with children”). This one, no surprise, has nothing that makes it special, except it feels quite authentic. The “sisters hate each” gets old really fast sadly.”

5. FANTASY LIFE – Officially Dead (but could be redeveloped for next year)

“Like The Pefect Stanleys, it’s another multicamera that starts with a character taking a selfie… All the sports jokes didn’t work for me. And there’s a ton of it. Regardless, it’s not that bad. Just not my thing and probably not the thing of enough people.”

6. 48 HOURS TIL MONDAY – Officially Dead

“The concept seemed original. The series is not. The concept was not, in fact. It’s just a pretext to make yet another family comedy that has nothing special going for it. It’s not horrible, but it adds nothing to the table”.

7. GRANDFATHERED – Ordered to series

“Maybe it’s just me but I found this script so pretentious! A total turn-off. Like the character John Stamos is playing in fact. But this guy is magical and I can totally see his performance improving the whole thing.”
