NBC| 2016/2017 – Fantasy Schedule

nbc

Those are predictions based on feelings and NBC final schedule may end up very differently! It will be announced on Sunday. Stay tuned and until then, enjoy the read!

Dramas renewed: LAW & ORDER: SVU | GRIMM | THE BLACKLIST | CHICAGO FIRE | CHICAGO PD | CHICAGO MED | SHADES OF BLUE | BLINDSPOT

New dramas ordered: TAKEN | EMERALD CITY | CHICAGO JUSTICE | TIMELESS | MIDNIGHT, TEXAS | THIS IS US |

Comedies renewed: THE CARMICHAEL SHOW | SUPERSTORE

New comedies ordered: THE GOOD PLACE | POWERLESS | TRIAL & ERROR | GREAT NEWS | MARLON

As the number one network, NBC could simply decide to fill the holes with new shows and hoping they stick. But I hope they will be a bit more ambitious with some bold moves while taking care of their comedy slate, using Superstore and The Carmichael Show as launchpad for new comedies, surrounded by The Voice and Little Big Shots.

MONDAYS

THE VOICE

THE VOICE

TIMELESS

Among the new dramas ordered by NBC so far, Timeless is the closest to The Blacklist & Blindspot. And when I say “closest”, it’s still very far from it. The time-travel twist makes it a bit harder to jump on occasionally but as ambitious as the concept is, they did something pretty simple, easy to understand. Will they be able to sustain the premise and the excitement though? I’m not sure. It’s more in the vein of Revolution in the end, that didn’t thrive behind The Voice but did very bad when it was moved somewhere else on the schedule (wednesdays at 8) for the second season. I would have prefered Miranda’s Rights there but obviously, it’s not gonna happen. They could also leave Blindspot there one more year, but it would be a waste of their best timeslot. If Timeless doesn’t do good, the spin-off of The Blacklist could totally end up here for the remaining of the season…

TUESDAYS

THE VOICE

THE GOOD PLACE / SUPERSTORE

CHICAGO FIRE

The Chicago Med/Chicago Fire duo does pretty well these days, sometimes matching The Voice ratings. But it’s clear Chicago Med doesn’t really need this to do acceptable numbers. It would probably do the same anywhere else on the schedule. NBC needs to use The Voice to give a good exposition to their comedies, a genre that is still almost dead on the network. Promising Superstore has at least two new shows that would fit well with it : The Good Place with Kristen Bell & Ted Danson and DC Comics’ Powerless. I’ll try The Good Place first in the fall, keeping the other one for a midseason launch when The Voice returns. Trial & Error, Great News & drama Law & Order: True Crime could end up on mondays or tuesdays to fill the holes when The Voice will be gone for a few months.

WEDNESDAYS

CHICAGO MED

LAW & ORDER: SVU

CHICAGO PD

Wednesdays should remain stable with Chicago Med solidifying the 8pm slot, where The Mysteries Of Laura did ok and Heartbeat failed and got cancelled. Nothing else should change, especially Law & Order: SVU that stays strong despite Empire and ABC comedies still going strong.

THURSDAYS

TAKEN

THE BLACKLIST

BLINDSPOT

NBC has many options for the 8pm timeslot but with the Olympics this summer and the football on Thursdays for one month, they’d better put there a show with a short-term commitment. Taken is only 10 episodes and fit well with high-octane fares The Blacklist & Blindspot, now a duo. They could put a preview somewhere during the Olympics to promote it heavily. It’s a better option than Emerald City, that seems to be a trainwreck from the get go. Chicago Justice could start at 8 during midseason.

FRIDAYS

EMERALD CITY

GRIMM

DATELINE

The Mysteries of Laura was worth at least a reduced third season but it didn’t happen. Miniseries Emerald City has a shot there. Shades of Blue could take over at midseason, while Midnight, Texas could replace Grimm if they don’t decide to keep it for a summer run.

SUNDAYS

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

MIDSEASON

CHICAGO JUSTICE / POWERLESS / TRIAL & ERROR / SHADES OF BLUE / MIDNIGHT, TEXAS / THIS IS US / THE CARMICHAEL SHOW / MARLON / GREAT NEWS

Comedy 2015 #PilotWatch : the full recap

It’s this time of the year when we get all judgy and mean, happy because we enjoy a show we didn’t think we would, sad because our expectations were too high for some others… It’s time to make tough choices (some are really easy though) and decide whose are the characters, the families, the places, the writers we want to spend the rest of the year with! Game ON.

_________________

First, on the comedy side, let me summarize it simply by saying almost nothing that has been picked up really stink but nothing really stand out either. That’s the ugly truth. In my opinion, The MuppetsThe Real O’Neals at ABC and Life In Pieces at CBS are the safer bets. NBC can do something with the duet Hot & Bothered/Superstore with a good lead in and a heavily marketed night. Sadly, I don’t see Grandfathered & The Grinder staying very long on FOX because of the channel’s recent track record… The rest is DOA. Dead on arrival.

abc   MARTHA PLIMPTON, JAY R. FERGUSON, NOAH GALVIN, MATT SHIVELY, BEBE WOOD

  1. THE REAL O’NEALS   rate rate rate rate

Already in love with this family. They put a huge smile on my face. Kudos to always great Martha Plimpton and very talented newcomer Noah Gavin, who nails it as the narrator. There’s no reason it wouldn’t work, except a bad timeslot. ABC, give it at least a Fresh Off The Boat treatment!

2. THE MUPPETS  rate rate rate rate

I’m not a fan of the original The Muppets. Not my thing. But this pilot presentation took me by surprise. Love the idea of the mockumentary twist. Could be a great deal of fun. But still not for me. It could become a huge hit for ABC, though.

3. DR KEN  rate rate rate

Dr Ken is so far the best match with Last Man Standing ABC found. Ken Jeong will divise the audience: some will love his performance, others will hate it. Liked it (and him) way more than I expected. Good for diversity, good for laughs, but not especially great regarding originality.

4. UNCLE BUCK  rate

Not funny in any way. The title character is plain stupid & irritating. The cast never clicks. The kids are meh but the adults are way worst. It’s fixable, the set up is not that bad, but no thanks. Not sure ABC would have ordered it if the cast was not black, in fact.

CBS-Logo  life-in-pieces

  1. LIFE IN PIECES  rate rate rate rate

Could have turned into a huge hit… if Modern Family never existed! Writing’s good, people can relate, a bit raunchy. The cast is great on paper but… except Josh Brolin & Zoe Lister Jones, where are the funny people?! BTW the concept is just cosmetics. That being said, wanna watch more. It’s really fun at times, potential is here.

2. ANGEL FROM HELL  rate rate rate

Not an amazing pilot but it’s kinda cool. Jane Lynch & Maggie Lawson have a real chemistry. There’s potential. It’s not CBS-y at all though. Probably won’t work. They could have made a great multicamera with it, that’s too bad.

nbc  2015-0507-Upfront2015-Superstore-KeyArt-1920x1080-ml

  1. SUPERSTORE  rate rate rate

Glad to have America Ferrera back on TV! Fun & sweet but a little too focus on a potential love story. Could turn great.

2. HOT & BOTHERED  rate rate

Eva Longoria is stunning, but something’s a little off… The other castmembers? The whole concept? Not sure. Didn’t laugh much, not “30 Rock” clever… It doesn’t have much going for it in the end, except Longoria (who has been better). And surprise! Zachary Levi (Chuck, Heroes Reborn) appears in a very Susan Mayer kinda scene. He’s playing the new network president.

3. CROWDED  rate rate

Loving Carrie Preston is not reason enough to get excited about this. It’s really old-school -which is not a problem for me- and a waste of her talent. She can do better. She’s worth better. Next!

4. TRUTH BE TOLD  rate

Not as raunchy as NBC wants us to believe. Ordering 13 comedy pilots for ending with such a generic Rules Of Engagement-y sitcom… Really NBC? The cast is meh, with the exception of Tone Bell.

fox   Grandfathered-John-Stamos-as-Jimmy-and-Josh-Peck-as-Gerald

  1. GRANDFATHERED  rate rate rate

Far from hilarious but John Stamos’ charm is in full force & Josh Peck’s a good surprise. Really sweet & has potential. It’s actually nice to see a pilot that improves the script and not the other way!

2. THE GRINDER  rate rate rate

Rob Lowe & Fred Savage make an interesting duet but as much as I liked the script, the concept has a hard time coming together on screen. It’s not as funny as it should have been. Episode 2 will be decisive. It needs to loosen up a bit.

3. THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE  rate rate rate

Cool concept, cool pilot and cool & cute lead (Jack Cutmore-Scott). Hope FOX won’t give it their usual midseason bad treatment…

Dramas renewed: LAW & ORDER: SVU – GRIMM – CHICAGO FIRE – CHICAGO PD – THE NIGHT SHIFT – THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA

New dramas ordered: HEROES REBORN – SHADES OF BLUE – EMERALD CITY – CHICAGO MED – BLINDSPOT – HEARTBREAKER – THE PLAYER – GAME OF SILENCE

Comedies renewed: UNDATEABLE

New comedies ordered: TELENOVELA – COACH – SUPERSTORE – CROWDED – PEOPLE ARE TALKING

MONDAYS

8pm – THE VOICE

9pm- THE VOICE

10pm- BLINDSPOT

Even if The Voice is down versus last year -but just a little bit- Monday at 10 is still the best launchpad NBC has in store. But State Of Affairs & The Night Shift‘s failures proved they can’t just throw anything there and hope for the best. Blindspot seems to be the safest bet: their best shot in the best slot! It can skew young, both male and female -with Jaimie Alexander and Sullivan Stapleton being a really hot pair- it’s ambitious but procedural-y enough to be enjoyed by the casual viewers and most of all, it has a Blacklist feel. That’s where the James Spader-starrer became a hit before being moved to Thursdays. Shades of Blue could have been an option, but it’s only a 13-episode season.

TUESDAYS

8pm- THE VOICE

9pm- BEST NIGHT EVER WITH NEAL PATRICK HARRIS

10pm- CHICAGO FIRE

It’s not easy scheduling variety show Best Night Ever With Patrick Harris Show. NBC made clear live events are their way of differentiating themselves from the other networks. They tried comedies after The Voice results show on Tuesday and they all failed. Only multicamera sitcom Undateable deserved a third season but launching it in the fall doesn’t seem to be the best idea (even with the live episodes twist). They need tro try something else first. So I decided to put The Neil Patrick Harris show at 9 with a possible special preview after America’s Got Talent‘s season finale in early September. Scheduling a variety show after The Voice totally makes sense. 10 episodes are ordered, it means by late november, they could finally launch new comedies and I’m thinking of a pair formed with Eva Longoria’s Telenovela and America Ferrera’s Superstore. If The Neil Patrick Harris Show is a hit, they will be able to promote them heavily during it for weeks! Undateable could be used during springtime with another multicamera comedy, either Coach or Crowded. At 10, stability is required with Chicago Fire doing OK.

WEDNESDAYS

8pm- HEARTBREAKER

9pm- LAW & ORDER: SVU

10pm- CHICAGO PD

Since The Mysteries Of Laura obtained a third season at eleventh hour (consisting of 13 episodes), they should move it to day, I’m thinking friday. NBC might want another light fare to start the night and soapy/cheesy medical Heartbreaker is their only option in that regard. I really don’t think it will work. That’s where Mercy failed a few years ago. Bur since they ordered it… Expect a cancellation sooner or later! The rest of the night remains the same. There’s no reason to change it. Lots of new crossovers between the Dick Wolf’s shows will help introduce Chicago Med at midseason.

THURSDAYS

8pm- HEROES REBORN

9pm- THE BLACKLIST

10pm- SHADES OF BLUE

Yes, placing Heroes Reborn, which is aiming at attracting the young (male) demo, right in front of Thursday Night Football on CBS for the first weeks of the season and then The Big Bang Theory is not the best idea ever, but where else could they put the 13-episode mini-series? Certainly not at 10, where a big chunck of the audience is not there anymore. I thought of Friday nights, paired with Grimm, but I guess they are a little bit more ambitious than that (though they shouldn’t…). The Blacklist stays where it is, even if the results are meh. It’s still better than the previous years with comedies. At 10, Jennifer Lopez’s cop show Shades of Blue could do the trick for 13 weeks. It should be kept far from the successful shows broadcasted between 8 and 10 on spanish-language networks. Chicago Med should go there at midseason (the ER spot for 15 years).

FRIDAYS

8pm- THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA

9pm- GRIMM

10pm- DATELINE

Grimm should stop trying fantasy shows on fridays, they’re doomed to fail. Grimm is not strong enough to launch anything and a new show can’t self-start on a Friday Night. Put The Mysteries Of Laura there, then why not, The Night Shift or another season of The Biggest Loser later in the season.

MIDSEASON

Dramas: THE NIGHT SHIFT / EMERALD CITY / APOCALYPSE SLOUGH / CHICAGO MED / THE PLAYER / GAME OF SILENCE

Comedies: UNDATEABLE / TELENOVELA / COACH / SUPERSTORE / CROWDED

As usual, NBC has a lot in store for midseason, especially since they have to replace Sunday nights once the Sunday Night Football has ended and start something new wherever Heroes Reborn and Shades Of Blue end up. The first spot could be filled with another 10-episode mini series, Emerald City, and the second one with Chicago Med or The Player, that could do well with The Blacklist. The Player could also be launched on Monday after The Voice if the first season of Blindspot is split into two parts. I don’t see English co-produced Apocalypse Slough appearing anywhere on the regular schedule but Friday is a possibility, and I guess Game Of Silence will end up at 10 on Sundays during springtime. The extra comedies ordered could take The Voice‘s slot on Tuesday between two editions.

“Superstore” (NBC) pilot preview: America Ferrera found love in a hopeless place!

???????????

Written & Produced by Justin Spitzer (The Office US). Co-produced by David Bernad (Enlightened), Sean Veder (Community) & Patrick Kienlen (That ’70s Show). Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). For NBC & Universal Television. 36 pages.

Description: Amy works for 10 years at a big box store, called Cloud 9, as a floor supervisor. Her boring and depressing days come to an end when she starts to fall for newbie Jonah, after they had a rocky start. Along with their fellow colleagues, they try to capture the beauty of every day moments in a hopeless place…

With America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, The Good Wife, How to train your dragon), Ben Feldman (A to Z, Mad Men, Drop Dead Diva), Lauren Ash (Super Fun Night), Colton Dunn (Parks And Recreation), Mark McKinney (Studio 60, Saturday Night Live), Nico Santos, Nichole Bloom (Shameless US, Project X) & Christopher Lloyd as guest star…

rate rate rate

Superstore is this kind of project you don’t really care about until there is a great talent cast in it. America Ferrera was the last one to join Superstore, she’s playing the lead and that quicky turned it into a hot piece, something we really want to watch. Not only because we miss Ugly Betty sometimes -but it would be ignoring the fact that the show was pretty bad for half its run- but also because she’s a very capable actress that: A. Should have stayed longer in The Good Wife or become a regular indeed B. Is better doing television in lead roles than little independent movies that may be great but never seen by anybody anywhere. America has been very picky the last few years, being one of the most sought-after actresses every pilot season and refusing all of the roles she was offered, so it’s safe to assume Superstore is very special and spoke to her. Or she just came to her senses and needed to work for real.

I don’t think Superstore is special. Not yet. But it could become. For that, it will need one thing, just one: stay out of the love story business for a while! We all know how the romantic comedies launched this year on the networks did: Selfie was underrated, A to Z was too sweet to be really good, Manhattan Love Story was a wreck and the three of them were cancelled. People love when the characters find love in a hopeless place. Oops, sorry. The Rihanna inside me wanted to show you what she got. No, people love when their characters unexpectedly fall in love, slowly and finally kiss -and make sweet love- in the right place at the right time. Love takes time. Look at Parks And Recreation! Or even The Office! It was not about love at first. It was -almost- all about love at the end. They fell in love with each other along the way, and we fell in love with them as a consequence. Superstore makes the big mistake of having a very obvious soon-or-not-so-soon-to-be future couple right at the center of it. And that is not what we are looking for. It’s a workplace comedy. We want to have fun while watching those silly people having a better day than we had. But rest assured, Superstore is also a little bit of that too.

America Ferrera will probably be perfect as Amy. It’s a simpler version of Betty, without the braces, the poncho and the humiliations. She’s her own woman. She’s cool, but not too cool. She’s fun, but not crazy fun. She’s good at her job but she knows how to crack some joke. We kinda love her at first sight. Jonah looks dumb, but he’s not. He’s gentle and sweet and fun. We kinda love him too but it takes a little more time. The people around them are crazy. Crazy fun. There’s Garrett, whose gimmick is to shout absurd things on the mic so the whole store can hear him, also he’s in a wheelchair; Mateo, a very competitive newbie who’s ready to do anything to prove that he’s better than Jonah; Dina, the frightening assistant manager who has very poor social skills and mistakes Jonah’s kindness for love at first sight; Cheyenne, a six-months pregnant teenage girl; and Glenn, the fatherly manager, a not very bright man. It’s a promising set of characters, representative of middle class America. And since it is set in a big superstore, they can add as many employees as they want, play with the customers, make some of them return regularly, have guest stars playing them…There is a lot to do!

I’ll add there are funny intermediate scenes showing employees actually doing their job, cos the rest of the time they just do everything but work. It’s nice. Plus, Christopher Lloyd appears as a guest through corporate videos where he is the expert manager teaching how to be the best employee. Most of the jokes there are references to Back to the Future, which is starting to get annoying. Don’t ge me wrong, I love the movies, but enough is enough! Too many TV shows refer to it now. More generally, cinema is very present in the script with multiple references to movies like Jurassic Park. I’m okay with it as long as it does not keep too many viewers at bay.

NBC desperately needs a broad comedy that can please low and middle class America as much as well-educated viewers, young and old people, blacks and whites and latinos… Superstore can be this one. The superstore is this place where all kind of people meet because they have no other choice: they have to eat (and Americans especially love to do just that). In real life, no magic happens there. But on TV, it can turn into a magical place we’d enjoy to make a stop by every week. Superstore’s pilot script is promising. Now, it’s the director and the actors’ turn to make it greater. If they succeed, then a hit is not unimaginable.
