FOX | 2016-2017 – Fantasy Schedule

fox

Those are predictions based on feelings and FOX final schedule may end up very differently! It will be announced on Monday. Stay tuned and until then, enjoy the read!

Dramas renewed: BONES | EMPIRE | SLEEPY HOLLOW | GOTHAM | LUCIFER | SCREAM QUEENS | ROSEWOOD | THE X-FILES ?

New dramas ordered: PRISON BREAK | SHOTS FIRED | 24: LEGACY | STAR | PITCH | THE EXORCIST | LETHAL WEAPON | APB

Comedies renewed: THE SIMPSONS | FAMILY GUY | NEW GIRL | BROOKLYN NINE-NINE | THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

New comedies ordered: SON OF ZORN | MAKING HISTORY | THE MICK

For their first “real” season with projects they developed themselves and without American Idol in the spring, FOX presidents rely heavily on well-known brands, leaving very few space for originality, except on the comedy side where there are ambitious concepts, not based on any previous material. Their schedule will probably work through multiple events: Prison Break being one, as well as miniseries Shots Fired and a likely return of The X-Files somewhere during the year. They have what they need to do better than this year. But doing great, probably not. They’re not there yet.

MONDAYS

PRISON BREAK

24: LEGACY

Betting on a male-oriented duo that worked in the past, against more feminine Dancing With The Stars & The Voice on ABC & NBC, seems to be the best –aggressive– way to go on mondays during fall season for FOX. Those shows have to avoid football on Thursdays on CBS then NBC. And there’s simply no other acceptable option. 24: Legacy is a 12-episode season while Prison Break is only there for 9 weeks. Miniseries Shots Fired could be used there as a bridge show. Then The X-Files could be back for a new batch of episodes. Paired with The Exorcist? It would totally make sense, especially since FOX seems to be really high on the series. And launching it on Fridays, where it will probably end up at some point, wouldn’t make sense.

TUESDAYS

NEW GIRL / THE MICK

SCREAM QUEENS

So yeah, Scream Queens got a second season despite awful live numbers and now they have to put it on the schedule no matter what. Let’s say FOX will mostly give up on Tuesday one more year, with the Ryan Murphy’s flop staying at 9 and New Girl getting paired with The Mick, meaning this new comedy about a trashy heroine trying to be good will probably end up down the drain sooner or later. For midseason, once Scream Queens has ended, light fare Lethal Weapon could be an option to take over the slot if FOX doesn’t go for a comedy night with Brooklyn Nine-Nine returning.

WEDNESDAYS

STAR
EMPIRE

No need to explain this scheduling obviousness. But let’s remember FOX doesn’t want to put Empire at 8. And Star, a lighter fare, should skew a bit younger than the hit show. If Rosewood was able to pull decent numbers in this timeslot, Star can at least do as good, and certainly will do better. There’s an alternative though: keeping Star in the wings for the months when Empire is gone. In this configuration, Rosewood could return at 8. Or Pitch could take over. But I feel like Pitch can become the new Empire if they play their cards right (like using baseball season to promote it heavily). It has a ton of potential and could surprise many. So a Rosewood/Pitch pairing would make sense during winter. Miniseries Shots Fired could end up there too.

THURSDAYS

GOTHAM

LUCIFER

Against football & TGIT, FOX has to play it safe on Thursday. At least during fall. The current monday slate, which is doing okay, could be transfered over here. For midseason, they could be more ambitious, with APB to start the night for example.

FRIDAYS

MASTERCHEF JUNIOR

SLEEPY HOLLOW

Okay, Masterchef Junior & Sleepy Hollow make an odd pair. But Sleepy Hollow is bound to Fridays now, where it will die. The 4th season has been ordered for syndication purposes only. They won’t give it a more exposed timeslot. And Masterchef Junior is… the show FOX put where there’s a hole in the schedule. They will probably use the first weeks of the season to encore 24: Legacy & Star before it takes over in november. And I think they should keep the last season of utility player Bones as a midseason filler, whether it’s on friday or somewhere else on the schedule.

SUNDAYS

THE SIMPSONS / SON OF ZORN

FAMILY GUY / THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

The Last Man On Earth‘s creators have two new shows hitting the air next year on FOX and the first season of Son of Zorn is already halfway shot. Meaning it’s a priority. Fall spot. The other one, Making History, could take over during spring, using the same strategy as the first season of The Last Man On Earth, which was a success at the time. Brooklyn Nine-Nine could be used to fill the holes when/if needed.

MIDSEASON

BONES | MAKING HISTORY | SHOTS FIRED | PITCH | LETHAL WEAPON | APB | THE EXORCIST

Shots Fired (FOX) pilot preview: A lesser American Crime

sanaa_headshot1

Also known as Indictment. Created & directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees, Love & Basketball). Co-created by Reggie Rock-Bythewood (Notorious BIG, Players, New York Undercover). Produced by Francie Calfo (Empire) & Brian Grazer (24, Friday Night Lights, Gang Related, Arrested Development). For FOX, 20th Century FOX Television, Imagine Television & Undisputed Cinema. 63 pages.

Description: A black officer shoots a white teen in a racially charged Tennessee town. Considering the unusual circumstances of this case, two out-of-town black prosecutors are brought in to sort through the evidence and find out what really happened. As the community grows anxious and the country is buzzing, Preston Terry and Ashe Bell must keep personal bias and suspicions to themselves to seek the truth…

With Sanaa Lathan (Nip/Tuck, Boss, Family Guy, Alien Vs Predator, Out of Time), Stephan James (Selma), Helen Hunt (Mad About You, As Good As It Gets, Twister), Richard Dreyfuss (Weeds, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Conor Leslie (Klondike, Other Space), Aisha Hinds (Under The Dome, True Blood), Tristan Wilds (The Wire, 90210DeWanda Wise

I’ve just finished my American Crime season 1 binge-watching when I’m writing this article. So, sorry if this brilliant show comes up a lot during the following review but the truth is they share a lot and even though Shots Fired is a decent pilot script, it can’t compare to American Crime‘s. In any way. That’s said. The FOX “event series” as they call it -meaning it’s written as a miniseries but it could get a second one with a new story if it works- is described by the proud network as a “mystery-thriller drama”, but I don’t think it really fits with what I’ve read. It’s a cop show, mostly. Yeah, it doesn’t sound as exciting but it’s closer to the truth. And a few very serialized cop shows like The Killing are great so it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad and generic. Mystery implicates surprising plot twists and twisted characters. Not that kind of show. Thriller means suspense and action. Not that kind of show either.

At its core, Shots Fired tells the story of a detective investigation led by two very different people, whose main common thread is to be… highly desirable. And it doesn’t take long before they start being flirtatious. Yeah, it was obvious from the pitch it was going to happen. At least, they don’t try to hide it. Just a few pages and we’re right in the middle of it. Well… It took 9 seasons for Mulder & Scully. Why do I talk about those two beloved characters? Because they’re back and because when you look closely at the pitch of Shots Fired, it’s like The X-Files, without the monsters or any supernatural events. Except, maybe, the monsters are humans hiding in this town.

American Crime is an anomaly on ABC. It’s a cable show from start to finish. Shots Fired is very networky. It means it gets a better chance to work, especially if FOX decides to pair it with Empire, since they share a producer and most of all a potential afro-american audience with two black leads and a racially-charged topic. And I’m okay with it, don’t get me wrong. It’s cool to have a fair entertaining show that treats a subject which is resonating with the news, with America. Especially when the next presidential election is coming. Oh but.. FOX means… FOX News. And FOX News means Republican propaganda. Means Donald Trump! Means misinformation and guns for all. And suddenly I’m afraid the show could be instrumental for the campaign. And that’s a scary thought… But NOTHING in the pilot script resembled any sort of propaganda. And the writers are black themselves. It’s safe to assume it’s all gonna be OK.

Shots Fired tries to be realistic mostly, and that’s where I have a little disapointment: the script is not detailed to the point where you can really feel the atmosphere of this little town in Tennessee smothering you, like Modesto did in American Crime. There’s not the same raw emotion either. They want us to be comfortable in front of our TV. And when you decide to talk about such a sensitive subject, making people comfortable is not the best way to make your point, in my opinion. It should be a punch in the face. It should make you feel pain, you should be able to sense the despair of the population. Let’s take an example: there’s the mother of the victim. We briefly met her during one of those classical interrogation scenes we’ve seen a thousand times before in every cop show. There’s no emotion coming out of it. At least on the page. It’s lazy. And that’s a real problem to me. Then you think about Felicity Huffman’s character in American Crime, also the mother of the victim, and it’s definitely another level… But it’s not fair to compare words with acting. That being said, as a network show, it works. It’s efficient. You want to see more. It’s a good place to start and you can only hope it’s gonna get more ambitious along the way, more complex, more subtle. One can dream, hum?

With Shots Fired, the real question is not “Is it any good?” but “Is it up to the challenge?”. And I really fear it’s not. It needs to be ‘cos it’s serious stuff here, it’s politics. You can’t fuck this up. It would be a shame. It’s too important these days. This love story they’re forcing between the leads doesn’t reassure me at all, honestly. So okay, you understood me: Shots Fired is not American Crime. Never will be. It’s not great but it’s not bad either. Let the writers call the shots. We’ll see what they’re capable of.

Dramas renewed: BONES – SLEEPY HOLLOW – GOTHAM – EMPIRE

New dramas ordered: THE X-FILES – SCREAM QUEENS – HOUDINI & DOYLE – MINORITY REPORT – ROSEWOOD – LUCIFER – THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE

Comedies renewed: THE SIMPSONS – FAMILY GUY – NEW GIRL – BOB’S BURGER – BROOKLYN NINE-NINE – THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

New comedies ordered: BORDERTOWN – GRANDFATHERED – THE GRINDER – THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

SUNDAYS

8pm- THE SIMPSONS / BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

9pm- FAMILY GUY / THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

FOX has found some momentum with The Last Man On Earth on Sunday, they’d better launch season 2 right away in the fall. Then long-awaited animated comedy Bordertown from Seth MacFarlane can finally air at midseason in the slot. Nothing else should change.

MONDAYS

8pm- GOTHAM

9pm- MINORITY REPORT

Gotham has lost a lot of steam over the year. FOX should have sticked with the original plan: no more than 15 episodes per season. But they were so desperate… Next year, there’s no reason to move the show somewhere else. Pairing it with sci-fi fare Minority Report makes sense. FOX bets big on it (though I’m pretty sure it won’t be a very strong player) but honestly, any other new show ordered could have been put there. Sleepy Hollow has to move anyway.

TUESDAYS

8pm- SCREAM QUEENS

9pm- THE GRINDER / GRANDFATHERED

As every other Ryan Murphy’s show, Scream Queens is guaranteed to start strong, because of curiosity and buzz, but what happens next totally depends on the quality. Honestly, I’m not very confident about this one but FOX will do the best they can to make it work. They already promote it since 2 months so… At 9, comedy should stay with new shows but New Girl is already old and has to go. Rob Lowe’s The Grinder & John Stamos’ Grandfathered should be paired, for better of for worse! It’s definitely a risky night but if FOX doesn’t take some risk, they’ll end up in the trash once again.

WEDNESDAYS

8pm- ROSEWOOD

9pm- EMPIRE

Definitely not the pair I was hoping for but since FOX decided not to give a chance to young-skewing musical dramedy Studio City (at least for now), they will bet on african-american viewers with Rosewood, a procedural with a black lead, leading to phenomenon Empire. Why not switching them? Because I think Empire could lose viewers at an earlier time slot and FOX certainly don’t want that. Plus, they’ll want their affiliates to stay happy, at least that night. I also think FOX should split Empire‘s season into two parts (6-8 episodes for fall, 6-8 episodes for spring) and bring The X-Files (paired with The Frankenstein Code?) in between for 6 weeks and make it a big event on a night where they know they are able to attract a lot of viewers.

THURSDAYS

8pm- BONES

9pm- SLEEPY HOLLOW

I don’t think FOX should launch too many new dramas at the same time, three is enough, so Thursday is just pairing two very modest players together on a night where FOX can’t compete anyway. Sleepy Hollow will have to go at midseason. Maybe for Lucifer.

FRIDAYS

8pm- MASTERCHEF JUNIOR

9pm- NEW GIRL / NEW GIRL

Masterchef Junior could have been used on another night but Friday is good too. FOX needs to have a little more ambition than that. They also have Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares for the rest of the season. At 9, they can just dump New Girl there with back to back episodes. They’ll have their +100 episodes.

MID-SEASON

Dramas: THE X-FILES / HOUDINI & DOYLE / THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE / LUCIFER

Comedies: BORDERTOWN / THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

I’m not sure what FOX can do with Houdini & Doyle, but it doesn’t seem to be a priority. Regarding comedy The Guide To Surviving Life, only 6 episodes have been ordered. Not a big vote of confidence. FOX will use it wherever they have a hole to fill in spring.

Before FOX reveals its new schedule next Monday, here’s the best & worst of their pilot season ! Just my humble opinion.

DRAMAS

1. LUCIFER – Ordered to series

It’s vivid, energetic and a lot of fun (…)  an almighty entertaining and funny as hell detective dramaFull preview here

2. STUDIO CITY – Dead but could be redeveloped

“I’m always suspicious when a show is officially described as a little bit of this mixed with a little it of that. But this time, they’re not playing with us: it really is The OC meets Shameless. With a bit of Nashville too.” Full preview here

3. FRANKENSTEIN – Ordered to series

“This pilot surprised me. In a good way! (…) It’s alive! It’s watchable! But a good pilot doesn’t always become a good series and I tend to think this one is more a good pilot than a good series. It could be really cool, if it was not meant to be a procedural in the end.” Full preview here

4. MINORITY REPORT – Ordered to series

definitely a hot property, with a honorable pilot script (…) It looks like a failure because those who liked the movie are not remotely excited by the project from what I understand and those who are not familar with it probably won’t find any good reason to give it a chance.” Full preview here

5.  ROSEWOOD – Ordered to series

“Dead on arrival. It’s boring and it has zero originality -except if you consider diversity as an originality of some sort.” Full preview here

COMEDIES

1. THE GRINDER – Ordered to series

“This one made me laughed a lot on the page. And imagining Rob Lowe doing the crazy made me want it bad. I don’t know how long the show can maintain the fun but for now, it’s a huge YES!”

2. THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE – Ordered to series

“Can’t say I liked everything about this pilot, but it certainly has a lot going for it, starting with a good appeal for the younger demo. I laughed a bit and I can see it last. Every episode is a lesson, and I want these guys to teach me some more”.

3. DETOUR – Officially Dead

“Your good ol’ coming of age story, but feels kinda fresh somehow. Sweet and funny, without being hilarious. Way broader than I expected.”

4. THE PERFECT STANLEYS – Officially Dead

“Multicamera comedies and FOX don’t mix really well since… well, forever (the exception being “Married… with children”). This one, no surprise, has nothing that makes it special, except it feels quite authentic. The “sisters hate each” gets old really fast sadly.”

5. FANTASY LIFE – Officially Dead (but could be redeveloped for next year)

“Like The Pefect Stanleys, it’s another multicamera that starts with a character taking a selfie… All the sports jokes didn’t work for me. And there’s a ton of it. Regardless, it’s not that bad. Just not my thing and probably not the thing of enough people.”

6. 48 HOURS TIL MONDAY – Officially Dead

“The concept seemed original. The series is not. The concept was not, in fact. It’s just a pretext to make yet another family comedy that has nothing special going for it. It’s not horrible, but it adds nothing to the table”.

7. GRANDFATHERED – Ordered to series

“Maybe it’s just me but I found this script so pretentious! A total turn-off. Like the character John Stamos is playing in fact. But this guy is magical and I can totally see his performance improving the whole thing.”
