SCOOP: The CW mulling a series order for “The Lost Boys” TV remake

Contrary to recent reports, The CW won’t wait before next season to give a chance to its The Lost Boys TV series by Veronica Mars & iZombie‘s creator Rob Thomas.

As The CW will bid farewell to The Vampire Diaries next friday, other vampires are almost ready to be unleashed. The Lost Boys’ ambitious new take on the 1987 Joel Schumacher movie won’t have to wait until next season to see the light of day, unlike the Charmed reboot that is not ready yet. The network is prepping a straigh-to-series order for the Rob Thomas show, without going to the traditional pilot stage. Shooting on the series could start as soon as this spring in Los Angeles, though nothing is set in stone. No word yet on the number of episodes and a potential air date.

Envisioned for a seven-season, anthology-style run, The Lost Boys series will tell a story spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade. Season 1 will be set in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, 1967. Each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same.

Thomas will exec produce via his Spondoolie Productions banner alongside frequent collaborators Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge. Gulfstream Television’s Juliana Janes, Mike Karz and Bill Bindley are also on board after the production company came up with the idea to remake the feature film. Warner Bros. Television is the studio.

IMO this potentially kills Life Sentence’s chance. Of the WB pilots, that’s the one who is very different from CW’s usual WB genre pilots. With Riverdale doing terrible ratings-wise, WB-side doesn’t need another terribly low rated female skewing show. Lost Boys,Black Lightning and Searchers all fits WB usual orders. Life Sentence does not.
The schedule also makes it impossible to easily slot in a female skewing show on any night. Monday at 9pm will got to a CBS newbie. Tuesday at 9pm has This is Us. Thursday has TGIT. Wednesday at 9pm has Empire. The chance of a female skewing show doing well on CW is very low.

So could they be ordering 5 series? They need at least two CBS shows and Valor and Dynasty seem like the picks; Black Lightning seems automatic; Life Sentence seems like another option for the variety. Or Searchers. Valor, Dynasty, Black Lightning, Searchers/Life Sentence, and Lost Boys?

It’s hard to tell what they’re looking for. They’re losing at least 2 WB shows (The Vampire Diaries & Frequency) & 1 CBS show (No Tomorrow). But with more and more shortened seasons for some of their shows, they’d need to order a little bit more maybe. I’d say 3 pilots + The Lost Boys. And I feel like they could go for 3 WB shows & 1 CBS show for once. I hope this time they will just decide on what’s best and not what is produced by who.

They’re losing 2 CBS shows- No Tomorrow and Reign. 3 if you count Beauty and the Beast, which ended in summer. They have always maintained at least 25% of their shows as CBS shows because of CBS’s part ownership, so they would have to have more than 3. CEG, JTV, and two new ones next season.

They can launch 3 shows this Fall if they do end up with 5 pilots.
      Dynasty on Mondays at 9pm
Black Lightning at 8pm Thursdays(with SPN at Thu 9pm) RIverdale is dumped after Arrow.
Searchers after Flash on Tuesdays(Legends is held to Midseason)

I think they’re going for 5 pilots for sure; they’re making this decision in light of low performances from their midseason shows. 5 new pilots=at least 5 maybe 6 cancellations.

And yeah, I see them putting on 3 in the fall. But I do think that the success of LoT as well as the crossover week success means that LoT will get a full order and it will stay in it’s Thursday slot for the fall.

My proposed schedule looks like this:

        Fall:
        Monday: Supergirl, Dynasty
        Tuesday: Flash, Black Lightning
        Wednesday: Arrow, Valor
        Thursday: LoT, SPN
        Friday: JTV, Crazy Ex

        Midseason:
        Monday: Supergirl, Riverdale
        Tuesday: Flash, Black Lightning
        Wednesday: Arrow, Searchers
        Thursday: LoT, Lost Boys
        Friday: JTV, SPN
        Summer: iZombie

Maybe a few tweaks for the midseason schedule but that seems the most likely. I’m most interested in how many they’re going to cancel; the schedule is already full as it is, ordering 5 would mean cleaning house, essentially.
